What exactly is a cosmetic allergy?
It is a skin reaction indicating an allergy to chemicals in cosmetics, such as fragrances, sunscreens, paraphenylenediamine (hair dye), preservatives, alcohol, mercury, steroids, and many other substances that have negative side effects on the skin. These cause irritation leading to allergies, dermatitis, infections, and hives. However…
“How can we tell if we are experiencing an allergic reaction to the cosmetics we are using…?”
The process is very simple. Just observe your skin for the following symptoms:

- A tingling or itchy sensation
When the skin comes into contact with harmful foreign substances or irritants, the initial reaction is a tingling or itchy sensation after use. Although this may not seem very dangerous, it is a warning sign to stop using the product immediately and check for the cause, such as unclean hands or dusty makeup tools, as it could lead to long-term negative side effects.
- Itchy rash or burning sensation
An itchy rash or burning sensation that occurs immediately is often caused by an allergy to fragrances, preservatives, or other harmful chemicals. Common symptoms include redness, swelling, and itchy bumps similar to hives. In severe cases, a burning sensation may also occur. We recommend washing the product off and monitoring the results; if symptoms persist, you should see a doctor as soon as possible.
- Increased sensitivity to sunlight
This symptom is caused by an allergy to cosmetics containing fragrances or acidic chemicals. You may notice that your skin becomes dull or develops dark spots more easily.
- White spots (Vitiligo-like symptoms)
This type of reaction is an allergy to mercury found in some cosmetics, causing patchy, uneven skin tone because skin cells have been destroyed. This is considered a severe symptom and requires serious medical attention.
- Acne flare-ups
If you experience an unusual amount of tiny bumps or inflamed acne, especially after starting a new product (within the first month), you can assume you might be allergic to that cosmetic. You should stop applying makeup and stop using that product immediately.
A quick trick to find out exactly what you’re allergic to
If you notice suspicious symptoms like a rash, itching, burning, or acne flare-ups but aren’t sure which product is the culprit because you’ve tried several new ones, we recommend stopping all products first. Then, gradually reintroduce them one by one and wait 2 weeks to see the results. If no symptoms occur, move on to the next product. You don’t have to test these on your face; you can perform a patch test on sensitive skin areas like the inner arm or behind the ear (apply morning and evening in the same spot).
ACSEINE’s Commitment to Sensitive Skin and Cosmetic Allergies

Cosmetic allergy is an issue that ACSEINE has recognized and prioritized since the beginning. In the 1970s, an era when cosmetics flourished and Asian women embraced makeup and beauty routines, many women suffered from cosmetic allergies. Acseine sought to study and find ways to help, care for, and protect the delicate, sensitive skin of all women so they could use cosmetics with confidence, safety, and a reduced risk of allergic reactions.
ACSEINE collaborated with dermatologists and 9 companies to establish the ACS Research Society for research and development, focusing on avoiding allergens and chemicals that cause reactions in sensitive skin. The ‘ACS’ in ACSEINE stands for ‘Allergen Control System,’ a unique system designed by Acseine Japan. Its goal is to identify skin irritants and then control or eliminate them from products as much as possible. This led to the creation of ACSEINE cosmeceuticals and cosmetics for sensitive, easily irritated skin, bringing beauty, health, and peace of mind to women ever since.

Therefore, every ACSEINE product protects delicate skin using Perfect Veil (PV) technology. Based on the philosophy that “everyone has vulnerable skin,” this unique ACSEINE innovation protects the skin from irritation caused by modern dyes, featuring the following outstanding properties:
- Coats pigments and UV filters with a silica shield to prevent direct skin contact, resulting in low irritation and no burning sensation.
- Gentle on sensitive and delicate skin.
- Provides light coverage with a transparent finish.
- Allows for easy blending and helps makeup adhere well to the skin.
- Creates a film that helps protect moisture within the skin.
- Maintains a “soft, lightweight,” “translucent,” and “evenly adherent” feel on the skin.
ACSEINE cosmetics are the answer to cosmetic allergy problems, addressing them directly at the source. We are committed to helping women with sensitive skin feel confident and express their natural beauty without the need for harsh dyes.
